Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to security, emphasizing that the protection of lives and property remains a top priority.

He stated that safety and security are essential for sustainable economic growth, social stability, and overall development.

The governor made this remark on Tuesday during the unveiling and handover of a Criminal Database and equipment to the Delta State Police Command to support the implementation of the Administration of Criminal Justice Law, 2022.

Represented by the State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Ekemejero Ohwovoriole, SAN, he highlighted that an efficient justice system requires dedicated personnel, proper infrastructure, and modern tools to enhance policing.

Oborevwori noted that the new Data Center and Investigation Room would provide the Police with a well-equipped space for recording statements, conducting interrogations, and ensuring professional and transparent investigations.

“This project is a testament to our administration’s commitment to security, justice, and good governance under the M.O.R.E. agenda,” he said.

He further emphasized that the facility strengthens law enforcement by improving fairness, accountability, and respect for human rights.

“Our administration remains committed to supporting security agencies with resources and technology within the state’s capacity.

This data center and investigation room are just one of the many initiatives under the M.O.R.E. agenda to improve policing, security, and the justice system in Delta State.”

The governor recalled that in November 2023, Inspector-General of Police, Dr. Kayode Egbetokun, inaugurated 31 new operational vehicles donated by the state to security agencies.

He commended the Delta State Security Trust Fund for its pivotal role in implementing these security initiatives, as well as the Commissioner of Police for fostering strong collaboration between security agencies and the state government.

“To our gallant police officers, I urge you to put this facility to good use, ensuring that it serves its dual purpose of conducting thorough investigations and upholding the rule of law,” Oborevwori stated.

The Delta State Commissioner of Police, CP Olufemi Abaniwonda, commended the Attorney-General for championing the initiative, emphasizing that modern crime management requires evolving strategies.

“What we are commissioning today is a state-of-the-art data center where suspects can be processed, and records securely maintained for future reference,” he stated.

He highlighted the importance of accurate record-keeping, noting that proper data management allows law enforcement to track suspects in real time.

“Every person has a name and a BVN. If we keep these records properly, we will be able to monitor suspects, as we cannot label them criminals until they are convicted.”

Abaniwonda also called for continued support in security enhancement, warning against criminals seeking refuge in the state.

“As neighboring states intensify efforts to drive out criminals, we must also step up our strategies to prevent them from using Delta as a safe haven.”

In his remarks, the Executive Secretary of the Delta State Security Trust Fund, Chief Sam Osasa, stressed the significance of the facility in criminal investigations.

He pointed out that many suspects often deny their confessional statements in court, which has posed a major challenge to the implementation of the Administration of Criminal Justice Law, 2022.

Osasa added that the provision of modern equipment and services would strengthen intelligence gathering, improve crime detection and prevention, and enhance efficient record management.

“This initiative will greatly aid the Delta State Criminal Investigation Department in collaboration with the State Ministry of Justice, ensuring more effective prosecution of offenders,” he concluded.
