Security forces in Delta State have achieved a major breakthrough in the fight against kidnapping, as five suspected kidnappers were neutralized, three arrested, and a cache of weapons recovered following an intelligence-led operation.
According to a press statement released on March 26, 2025, the operation was conducted by the Commissioner of Police (CP) Special Assignment Team (CP SAT) in Ughelli North Local Government Area and its environs.
Acting on credible intelligence, operatives, led by ASP Julius Robinson, apprehended the suspected gang leader, Adamu Abubakar, alias ‘Dogo,’ at DSC Roundabout in Warri on March 21, 2025, around 11:00 PM.
His arrest led to the capture of two other gang members, Abubakar Mohammed (‘Chede’) and Mohammed Bellow, at Otovwodo Park, Ughelli North.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects were allegedly behind multiple kidnappings and armed robberies across Iyamuge, Otu-Jeremi, Warri, Ughelli, and surrounding areas.
Weapons Recovered, Gun Battle Ensues
Based on their confessions, the arrested suspects led police operatives to their hideout in Iyamugo Forest, where security personnel recovered:
One AK-47 rifle
One pump-action gun
Three locally made guns
Two magazines
60 rounds of AK-47 live ammunition
17 rounds of live cartridges
However, as the operatives exited the forest, suspected gang members ambushed them, engaging the police in a fierce gun duel.
In the exchange of fire, five kidnappers sustained gunshot wounds and were taken to the hospital, where they later died. The remaining gang members managed to escape.
Police Reaffirm Commitment to Fighting Crime
The Delta State Police Command hailed the operation as a major victory in the fight against organized crime.
SP Edafe Bright, the Police Public Relations Officer, stated that the deployment of CP SAT under the directive of Commissioner of Police Abaniwonda Olufemi has significantly improved security in the region.
He assured residents that the three arrested suspects are in custody and that investigations are ongoing to track down other fleeing members of the gang.
This latest success underscores the Delta State Police Command’s determination to rid the state of criminal elements, ensuring safety for all residents.
