A new era of proactive, intelligence-driven policing has commenced in Delta State as the 24th Commissioner of Police, Yemi John Oyeniyi, formally assumed office with a strong commitment to safeguarding lives and property while reinforcing professionalism within the Command.

Addressing members of the press on Wednesday April 1, 2026, during his inaugural briefing in Asaba, CP Oyeniyi expressed deep gratitude to the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, for the confidence reposed in him, pledging to uphold the mandate of ensuring security across the state.

He described his appointment as both an honour and a call to duty, emphasizing that the safety of residents remains the Command’s foremost priority.

Recognizing Delta State’s strategic importance as a major economic hub, the Commissioner underscored the need for a robust and responsive security framework capable of supporting commerce, industry, and overall development.

While acknowledging existing security challenges, he assured residents that the Command is poised to confront criminal activities with renewed focus and operational efficiency.

CP Oyeniyi paid tribute to his predecessor, Aina Adesola, for laying a solid foundation, noting that his administration would consolidate on past gains while introducing forward-looking reforms to address emerging threats.

Central to his strategy is the Inspector-General’s directive to streamline tactical operations across police formations nationwide.

The Delta State Command, he said, will fully align with this directive by ensuring that all tactical units operate under coordinated supervision, guided by intelligence and clearly defined objectives.

This approach is expected to eliminate operational overlaps, boost accountability, and enhance rapid response to crimes such as kidnapping, armed robbery, and cult-related violence.

In a firm stance on discipline, the Commissioner declared zero tolerance for misconduct, human rights violations, and unprofessional behavior among officers.

He stressed that all personnel must operate strictly within the law while treating citizens with dignity and respect, both on and off duty.

Shifting focus toward crime prevention, CP Oyeniyi outlined plans to increase police visibility across communities, strengthen intelligence-gathering mechanisms, and deepen collaboration with key stakeholders, including the state government, security agencies, traditional rulers, and youth groups.

He reiterated that effective security is a shared responsibility, calling on residents to actively support law enforcement efforts by providing credible and timely information.

“To the good people of Delta State, your cooperation is vital. If you see something, say something,” he urged, reinforcing the importance of community participation in maintaining peace and order.

He also acknowledged the critical role of the media in shaping public awareness and fostering transparency, expressing readiness to engage journalists constructively in promoting accurate and responsible reporting.

Addressing officers and men of the Command, CP Oyeniyi set clear expectations rooted in discipline, professionalism, and unwavering respect for the rule of law, describing these values as non-negotiable pillars of effective policing.

With a clear vision and determined leadership, the new Commissioner affirmed his mission to build a safer Delta State, anchored on service, integrity, and the protection of all citizens.

“Together, we will uphold the law and ensure that Delta State remains secure for everyone,” he concluded
