The Delta State Maritime Polytechnic, Burutu, has recognized key figures for their contributions to education and development, presenting them with Awards of Excellence during its first convocation ceremony on Saturday, March 8, 2025.

Among the honorees were Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori; former senator James Manager; and prominent peace advocate and environmentalist, Chief (Comrade) Sheriff Mulade.

Others awarded for their support included Burutu LGA Chairman, Hon. Julius Takeme, and His Royal Highness, Bosu Dio (JP), Ayamabulou 1, the Ibenanawei of Iduwini Kingdom and Chairman of the Traditional Rulers of Oil and Mineral Producing Communities of Niger Delta (TROMPCON), Delta State Chapter.

Recognizing Contributions to Education and Development

Governor Sheriff Oborevwori was honored for his role in upgrading the institution to polytechnic status, making it the first Maritime Polytechnic in Nigeria and West Africa outside South Africa.

His leadership ensured the transformation of the school into a specialized institution dedicated to maritime studies.

Former Senator James Manager, who represented Delta South Senatorial District from 2003 to 2023, was recognized for his legislative contributions, sponsorship of numerous bills, and support for educational advancement in Delta State.

Chief Sheriff Mulade, a passionate advocate for education in Ijaw land, was awarded for his tireless efforts in championing the establishment of higher institutions.

As the National Coordinator of the Center for Peace and Environmental Justice (CEPEJ) and Chairman of the Delta State Mini-Football Association, Mulade played a crucial role in pushing for the conversion of the former Delta State School of Marine Technology into a university.

While the school was ultimately upgraded to a polytechnic, his persistent advocacy was acknowledged as instrumental in achieving this milestone.

The institution’s management emphasized that Comrade Mulade’s contributions to education and development could not be overlooked, hence the well-deserved recognition.

Acknowledging Government and Stakeholder Support

Expressing gratitude, the Rector of the Polytechnic, Professor James Okoro, thanked the Delta State Government for ensuring the institution’s successful transition.

He also acknowledged the various stakeholders who played significant roles in its development, stating that the awards reflected the school’s commitment to honoring individuals who had contributed to its growth.

It is worth recalling that under Rt. Hon. Oborevwori’s leadership as Speaker, the Delta State House of Assembly approved the institution’s upgrade to a polytechnic through the Delta State Polytechnic, Burutu Law, 2023, replacing the Delta State School of Marine Technology Law, 2006.

This legislative move paved the way for the institution’s elevation, reinforcing Delta State’s commitment to educational and technical development.
