The Executive Chairman of the Delta State Board of Internal Revenue Service (DSIRS), Hon. Solomon Ighrakpata, has applauded Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for approving the release of ₦8.4 billion to settle long-standing contractual debts owed to contractors of the Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (DESOPADEC).
Hon. Ighrakpata, in a statement issued in Asaba, described the Governor’s decision as a bold and commendable move that underscores his administration’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and fiscal responsibility.
According to him, the payment approval represents a major step toward resolving inherited financial obligations dating back over a decade.
“His Excellency’s approval of this payment reaffirms his dedication to fairness and good governance. It is a significant relief for DESOPADEC contractors who have waited patiently for many years,” Ighrakpata stated.
“This action will not only rebuild confidence among contractors but also inject life into the state’s economy, particularly in oil-producing communities.”
The IRS Chairman noted that the release of the funds aligns with the state government’s broader strategy of encouraging private sector participation in development and ensuring the equitable distribution of resources.
He further stressed the importance of conducting comprehensive audits to verify claims and maintain transparency in the payment process, commending Governor Oborevwori for insisting on due diligence.
Hon. Ighrakpata added that the initiative reflects the Governor’s resolve to address challenges inherited from past administrations while advancing grassroots development through his MORE agenda.
He urged contractors and stakeholders to reciprocate the government’s goodwill by remaining compliant with tax obligations, emphasizing that timely payment of taxes remains crucial to sustaining the state’s development efforts.
“The Oborevwori administration needs every available revenue to drive progress and deliver on its promises to Deltans,” he said.
“I therefore call on all individuals, corporate organizations, and business establishments to support the government by being tax-compliant.”
He concluded by commending the Governor’s leadership, noting that his proactive approach to tackling inherited liabilities demonstrates prudence and a genuine commitment to the economic growth and stability of Delta State
