Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, on Tuesday inaugurated a new cluster of housing units and support infrastructure in Okuama, Ughelli south local government area, a landmark development signalling the State Government’s commitment to rebuilding the once-devastated community.
Okuama, which was levelled in March 2024 following the tragic killing of 17 Nigerian Army personnel, has endured months of displacement, loss and uncertainty.
The inauguration of the new resettlement cluster marks the beginning of a new chapter for residents returning home after a period of intense trauma.
Represented by the Deputy Governor, Sir Monday Onyeme, Governor Oborevwori described the ceremony as “a moment of renewal” for Okuama and for Delta State as a whole.
“My beloved people of Okuama, this is more than a ceremony. It is a moment when we turn the page from pain to possibility, from loss to restoration, from despair to hope,” he said.
“We are not just commissioning buildings; we are reaffirming our commitment to peace, dignity and shared prosperity.
“Though the memories of displacement remain painful, our resolve is to rebuild, reconcile and restore.”
The Governor noted that the new resettlement center embodies the spirit of the MORE Agenda, which prioritizes rebuilding communities, restoring trust, and upholding the dignity of every Delta resident.
“This project reflects what government can achieve when compassion meets responsibility,” he added.
“I urge the people of Okuama to embrace this new beginning with courage. The facilities are here; the future now depends on your collective resolve to sustain peace and unity.”
Governor Oborevwori commended contractors, the Ministry of Housing, Ughelli South Local Government, security agencies, traditional institutions and all stakeholders who contributed to the project.
He also paid special tribute to the resilience of Okuama indigenes.
“Your strength, patience and faith have made this day possible. You are the true heroes of this moment,” he said.
Local Government, Community Leaders Express Gratitude
Chairman of Ughelli South Local Government Council, Hon. Lucky Avweromre, explained that the local council executed the resettlement housing, while thanking the Governor for complementing the effort with broader social infrastructure, including a primary school, secondary school and primary healthcare centre.
The Okuama community, in an address signed by Mr. Okrika Emmanuel and Comrade Akemor Victor, expressed deep appreciation to the Governor for intervening at a time of their greatest need.
“What happened to us on March 14, 2024, was a shock we never imagined,” the community stated.
“If not for your prompt intervention, our situation would have been far worse. You listened to our cries, and we are grateful.”
The community pledged continued support for the Governor’s administration, emphasizing their commitment to peace.
“We believe in your leadership. On behalf of Okuama, we promise to stand by your government and ensure lasting peace in our environment.”
