Oborevwori Honoured With Distinguished Governor Award by SWAN

Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has been conferred with the Distinguished Governor Award and inducted into the Nigeria Order of Sports by the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), in recognition of his exceptional contributions to sports development in Delta State and Nigeria at large.

The honour was bestowed on him during the grand finale of SWAN’s Diamond Jubilee Celebration held on Friday at the MKO Abiola Stadium, Abuja, to commemorate 60 years of excellence in Nigerian sports journalism.

In its citation, SWAN commended Governor Oborevwori for his administration’s sustained investment in sports infrastructure, youth empowerment, and its unwavering support for sports journalism.

The association also applauded his commitment to the successful hosting of the National Youth Games, the ongoing reconstruction of the Warri Township Stadium, and the maintenance of strategic sports facilities across the state.

The Governor was further lauded for promoting school and grassroots sports, ensuring Team Delta’s dominance at the National Sports Festival, instituting an innovative athletes’ welfare programme, and strengthening Delta’s contributions to Team Nigeria’s success at international sporting events.

Receiving the award on behalf of the Governor, his Senior Special Assistant on Media, Mr. Fred Edoreh, who was also conferred with the SWAN Fellowship Award, expressed gratitude to the association for recognizing Delta State’s steady progress in sports and other development sectors.

Edoreh praised SWAN for its consistent role in spotlighting achievements that foster national unity and development through sports.

Other distinguished honorees at the event included former Super Eagles coaches Augustine Eguavoen and Samson Siasia; Olympic medalists Daniel Igali, Chika Chukwumerije, and Blessing Oborodudu.

The ceremony was graced by notable dignitaries such as the Chairman, National Sports Commission, Mallam Shehu Dikko; Director-General, Bukola Olopade; former Minister of Sports Development, Mr. Sunday Dare; Director-General, National Institute for Sports.

Others were former Edo State Deputy Governor, Mr. Phillip Shaibu; former DG, National Sports Commission and traditional ruler of Chanso, HRH Dr. Alhassan Yakmut; and the Ochi’Idoma, HRH Dr. Elaigwu Odogbo John.
