Oborevwori Felicitates NUJ At 70, Commends Role In Nation Building

Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has congratulated the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) on its 70th anniversary, praising the union for its unwavering commitment to ethical journalism and its vital role in national development.

In a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Sir Festus Ahon, Governor Oborevwori extended warm felicitations to NUJ President, Comrade Alhassan Yahaya, and all members of the union, lauding their immense contributions to upholding press freedom, accountability, and democratic growth in Nigeria.

He emphasized the importance of continuous learning for journalists, especially in an era driven by rapid advancements in Information and Communications Technology (ICT).

According to the Governor, sustained professional development is crucial for media practitioners to remain ethical, objective, and development oriented in their reporting.

“On behalf of the government and people of Delta State, I congratulate the President of the NUJ, Comrade Alhassan Yahaya, and all Nigerian journalists on the 70th anniversary of the union,” Oborevwori stated.

“I appreciate Nigerian journalists for their vital role in holding government accountable and for their invaluable contributions to our democracy and national progress.”

Highlighting the media’s position as the Fourth Estate of the Realm, Oborevwori described journalists as key stakeholders in society, wielding significant influence which must be channeled towards fostering peace, development, and good governance.

He also commended the NUJ leadership for its efforts in promoting press freedom and advocating for the welfare of media practitioners, calling for continued support to ensure journalists are better equipped to perform their watchdog roles effectively.

“The NUJ’s 70th anniversary is a landmark in Nigeria’s media history,” he said. “It reflects decades of dedication to journalistic excellence and the promotion of democratic ideals. I urge the union to remain steadfast in its mission and to continue shaping a positive national narrative.”

Governor Oborevwori reaffirmed his administration’s support for a free and responsible press, pledging to work with the media in advancing transparency, accountability, and the overall development of Delta State.
