The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Delta State Council, has announced the death of Comrade Matthew Ochei, a member of the Asaba Correspondents’ Chapel, describing his passing as a painful loss to the union and the journalism community.
In a statement issued on Wednesday January 6, 2026, the NUJ said Comrade Ochei died in the early hours of the day after a brief illness, a development that threw the chapel and the entire council into deep mourning.
The union noted that the sudden demise of the journalist came as a profound shock to his colleagues, given his warmth, dedication, and active contributions to the affairs of the NUJ in Delta State.
“The loss is a painful reminder of the fragility of life and has left many who knew him in deep anguish,” the statement said.
The NUJ, Delta State Council, expressed solidarity with the bereaved family, assuring them of the union’s support at this difficult time.
It also offered prayers for strength, comfort, and fortitude for the family to bear what it described as an irreparable loss.
The statement, jointly signed by the Chairman of the Council, Comrade Churchill Oyowe, and the Acting Secretary, Comrade Josephine Omodior, prayed for the repose of the soul of the departed and urged colleagues to draw strength from the memories of his life and service.
Comrade Matthew Ochei was described as a committed union member whose absence will be deeply felt within the Asaba Correspondents’ Chapel and the wider NUJ family in Delta State.
