…says “You are one of Nigeria’s finest leaders who stand against oppression”
The Bolowei (Traditional Prime Minister) of Gbaramatu Kingdom and respected Niger Delta elder statesman, Chief Dr. Wellington O. Okirika (CON), has praised Senator Ned Munir Nwoko for his courageous advocacy on the direct allocation of the 13% derivation fund to oil-producing host communities, describing the Delta North Senator as a fearless champion of justice and equity.
Widely known as “Mr. 13% Derivation Fund” for his decades-long activism on behalf of host communities, Chief Okirika made the remarks during a courtesy visit to Senator Nwoko, with meetings held both at the senator’s residence and his office.
In a statement issued after the visit, Chief Okirika, who was the pioneer Executive Chairman of the Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (DESOPADEC) and a founding member of the Host Communities of Nigeria Producing Oil and Gas (HOSCON), said he was compelled to bring the matter of what he described as a 30-year injustice to Senator Nwoko due to his confidence in the senator’s commitment to fairness and constitutional order.
“You have proven yourself a true leader by taking a principled stand against the decades-long oppression of the Niger Delta people,” Chief Okirika declared.
“You are one of the best leaders in Nigeria, bold, vocal, and completely opposed to injustice.”
He expressed hope that Senator Nwoko’s legislative push would mark a significant milestone in addressing the economic marginalization of host communities through the proper and lawful implementation of Section 162(2) of the Nigerian Constitution, which mandates that 13% of oil revenue be allocated to oil-producing communities.
Chief Okirika noted that communities in Delta Central and Delta South senatorial districts are closely following Senator Nwoko’s efforts at the National Assembly, and are particularly impressed by his unwavering commitment to issues that affect not just the Niger Delta but the nation at large.
The people of Gbaramatu Kingdom, home to prominent resource control advocate Government Ekpemupolo (alias Tompolo), also conveyed their appreciation and solidarity with Senator Nwoko’s legislative campaign.
“We are confident the governors will soon hear from you directly,” Chief Okirika stated.
“The Niger Delta region will never forget your courage as you move forward with the motion for an Act to ensure the Federal Government complies with the constitutional provision for direct payment of the 13% derivation to host communities.”
Chief Okirika’s endorsement adds to the growing support for Senator Nwoko’s legislative agenda, which seeks to bring long-overdue transparency, fairness, and community empowerment to the oil-producing areas of the Niger Delta.
