…As Urhobo College defeats Ogbe-Ijaw 2–1 to win 2025 Principal’s Cup

Urhobo College, Effurun, has emerged champions of the 2025 Zenith Bank/Delta State Principal’s Cup after defeating Ogbe-Ijaw Grammar School, Ogbe-Ijaw, 2–1 in an exciting final played on Thursday at the Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba.

With the victory, Urhobo College received a brand-new bus and a cash prize of ₦2 million, while Ogbe-Ijaw Grammar School went home with ₦1.5 million as runners-up.

Addressing the crowd at the grand finale, Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, congratulated the winners for their outstanding performance.

Represented by his Deputy, Sir Monday Onyeme, FCA, the Governor said the competition aligns with his MORE Agenda, which prioritizes youth empowerment and the creation of equal opportunities for every young Deltan to excel.

“We believe that education goes beyond the classroom. The lessons you learn on the field, teamwork, discipline, and perseverance, are the same values that lead to success in life,” the Governor stated.

He thanked God for the successful completion of the tournament and commended all participating schools for showcasing talent, unity, and sportsmanship throughout the competition.

“Today, we witnessed more than a football match; we saw talent, teamwork, discipline, and true sportsmanship,” he remarked.

“The thrilling contest between Urhobo College and Ogbe-Ijaw Grammar School was a delight to watch. Both teams demonstrated great skill, courage, and determination, and I am proud of every one of you.”

Governor Oborevwori urged the champions to remain humble and focused while commending the runners-up and other schools for their spirited performances.

“To all our young athletes, keep training hard, listen to your coaches, and never neglect your studies. Education remains the foundation for every great dream,” he advised.

The Governor further disclosed that the state government would soon launch a special programme to identify and nurture football talents discovered through competitions like the Principal’s Cup, with the aim of preparing them for opportunities at state, national, and international levels.

In her remarks, the Commissioner for Secondary Education, Mrs. Rose Ezewu, described the championship as a vital complement to classroom learning, promoting unity, discipline, and excellence among students across the state.

She noted that since inception, the tournament has grown significantly, producing young footballers who have gone on to represent Delta State and Nigeria in national and international competitions.

Also present at the event was the Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Guwor, alongside other dignitaries who witnessed the thrilling encounter.
