Laudable plans by the governorship candidate on the platform of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), cum largest employer of labour in Delta State, His Excellency, Olorogun Barr. Kenneth Gbagi, to revamp the moribund textile industry in the State is worthwhile.

The new move should be applauded and embraced by all Deltans as previous efforts by past administrations never yielded results. So, the newly announced plan is heartwarming.

Trust the industrialist, he would not allow it to be followed by the heart-ache of inaction as the textile industry remainsin comatose amid the worsening mass unemployment which the sector would normally have ameliorated and a lot needs to be done if the industry is revived in Delta State.

Addressing a crowd of party members and supporters in Asaba, the State capital during a mega rally on Saturday March 4th 2023, Gbagi, assured them that his government’s plan for resuscitating the state’s textile sector, should be seen as a desirable one which would be followed with concrete steps towards concrete achievements.

The measures, which include reversing the trend of companies leaving the State, stopping smuggling and counterfeiting of textile materials and making patronage of made-in-Delta goods by government agencies a priority are not altogether new.

Most are ideas enunciated before but poorly enforced. The difference this time around, therefore, should be in actualisation.

Hear him: “Within one year of my being a governor, I will alternate the Onitsha market to 10, 000 shops and it will become part of the Onitsha market and our people will have something to do.

“It is understanding what you want to do will revamp the Asaba Textile Mill, within one year, I will do three shifts and I am not going to do Akwuocha alone. I will take shift for two months to do the Akwuocha.

“I will then move to Jeans materials to produce Jeans material, some will pack it and we will export Jeans material for America, China and we will earn good money.

“I will declare free education to the university level for all Deltans. What is needed is a man of character”, he said.
