In a significant boost to the golfing calendar and Delta State’s sporting prestige, the Ibori Golf and Country Club (IGCC), Asaba, has announced the launch of the maiden Governor’s Cup Invitational Golf Tournament to mark the 62nd birthday of Governor Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori.

Club Captain and Director-General of the Delta State Capital Territory Development Agency, Chief Patrick Ukah, made the announcement in a statement issued on Monday.

He described the upcoming event as a convergence of top-tier golfing excellence and a celebration of leadership, unity, and Delta State’s diverse heritage.

According to Ukah, the week-long tournament will feature over 300 participants, including elite professionals, seasoned amateurs, and high-profile guests from across Nigeria and the international golfing circuit.

“The Governor’s Cup is more than a birthday tribute,” he said. “It is a celebration of 33 years of peaceful co-existence in Delta State and a platform for promoting sportsmanship, unity, and excellence through the game of golf.”

The tournament will run from Monday, June 23, to Saturday, June 28, on the championship greens of the Ibori Golf and Country Club.

Proceedings will open with the Caddy Tournament on June 23, followed by the highly anticipated two-day Pros Event on June 25 and 26.

Featuring Nigeria’s finest golf professionals, the Pros Event will offer a total prize purse of ₦3 million.

The action continues on Friday, June 27, with qualifying rounds for club members and specially invited guests, setting the stage for the grand finale on Saturday, June 28.

The final day will see 80 finalists and VIP players tee off from 7:00 AM, culminating in a gala dinner and prize presentation at 6:00 PM.

Ukah noted that the Governor’s Cup follows closely on the heels of the IGCC Captain’s Day Tournament and the commemoration of Governor Oborevwori’s two-year anniversary in office.

He emphasized the club’s commitment to using golf as a catalyst for tourism development, economic growth, and regional visibility.

“The Governor’s Cup is not just a sporting event, it’s a statement of intent. Through golf, we aim to drive investment, celebrate leadership, and project Delta State as a thriving hub of peace and opportunity,” he stated.

Chief Ukah also extended appreciation to the club’s corporate sponsors, golfing partners, and stakeholders whose support has helped bring the historic tournament to life.
