Delta State Commissioner for Information, Mr. Charles Aniagwu, has finally spoken on the Godfather-Godson relationship between the incumbent governor of the state, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa and former governor, Chief James Onanefe Ibori.
“As at 1991, Senator Okowa was already much involved in politics. Before that time he was already Secretary to the then Ika local government”.
The Information Commissioner said this on Monday June 6th 2022, while briefing journalists in Asaba, the state capital.
“When Delta was created and the local government was split into two Ika Northeast and Ika south, Senator Okowa emerged as Chairman of Ika northeast, at that moment he has started climbing.
“At the turn of the century when it was time for politicking, essence of like minds came together and felt there was the need to change the status quo. Okowa, Ibori, Manager, Nwaoboshi and a number of others came together and worked for the success of the then governorship aspirant, James Ibori among many other aspirants and he won.
“Will it be safe for anybody to see that relationship as a relationship between a Godfather and a Godson? Haven emerged, of course the moment you become a governor, you become the leader of the team.
“Before that time, I wouldn’t know the political position the person you called Godfather, was holding. I have told you the two Okowa was already holding. We will not and we have never denied that Ibori was Okowa’s leader because haven become the governor and leader of that political family and haven appointed him and many others into the State cabinet, there is no big deal, he is the leader, that is not in contest”, insisting that there was no issues with the two leaders who have continued to remain close as great leaders.
“We are on course and I don’t think there is any problem between Governor Okowa and our leader, Chief James Ibori.
“Okowa has continued to show him respect and I have not seen Chief Ibori speak ill of Governor Okowa and of course knowing who Okowa is, he will never speak ill of anyone especially his leader,” he stated.
