…pledges to resolve Ughelli’s traffic challenges
Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, officially inaugurated the ₦39.3 billion Otovwodo (Ughelli) Flyover project on Monday, marking a significant step towards addressing the persistent traffic issues at one of the state’s busiest junctions.
During the ceremony in Ughelli, Governor Oborevwori emphasized that this initiative is a cornerstone of his administration’s focus on infrastructure development.
He underscored its importance in ensuring efficient resource allocation, robust road construction, and enhancing connectivity for both urban and rural areas, ultimately fostering inclusive economic growth.
He acknowledged Ughelli’s rapid population surge, which has put immense strain on its transportation network, particularly at Otovwodo Junction on the East-West Road.
The governor shared his personal experiences with the gridlock, which has become a daily challenge for commuters, often costing them precious hours.
As a temporary solution, the state government has constructed alternative routes, including Uduere Street, Okogbe Street, Oru Street, Edo Street, and Royal Avenue, at an investment of nearly ₦6 billion to alleviate traffic congestion while the flyover is being built.
The project, awarded to Julius Berger Nigeria Plc, is projected to be completed within 12 months, with the governor reiterating the necessity of adhering to this timeline given the junction’s critical role in regional traffic flow.
Oborevwori detailed that the flyover will feature a multi-span reinforced concrete bridge, dual carriageways, roundabouts, and supporting roadworks that will link the East-West Road with other key routes.
This development is expected to mitigate traffic congestion, shorten travel times, enhance safety, and invigorate local economic activities.
Highlighting the job creation potential, the governor indicated that thousands of direct and indirect employment opportunities would arise from the project.
He urged residents to exercise patience and adhere to traffic regulations during the construction phase.
Reaffirming his dedication to transparency and accountability, he assured that major projects would continue without incurring debt.
The governor noted that numerous completed projects await commissioning, with additional initiatives planned for 2026 as part of the Renewed Hope for MORE Agenda.
Earlier in the day, Engr. Peer Lubasch, Managing Director of Julius Berger Nigeria Plc, expressed gratitude for the trust placed in the firm, regarding the contract as a testament to its technical capabilities and collaborative relationship with Delta State.
He assured the community of the project’s timely execution and adherence to international standards, which will include features such as specialized drainage systems and solar street lighting.
Following the groundbreaking, Governor Oborevwori visited HRM Wilson Ojakovo Oharisi III, the Ovie of Ughelli Kingdom, and Chief Morrison Olori, founder and Chairman of Ukodo Nation, reiterating his commitment to serving all Deltans.
Local leaders, including Hon. Jaro Egbo, Chairman of Ughelli North Local Government Council, and Chief Peter Akpofure, the ‘Otota’ (spokesman) of Ughelli Kingdom, lauded the governor for this long-awaited project and urged for further improvements in internal roads and infrastructure.
The event saw participation from notable figures such as Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Guwor, Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Elder Omeni Sobotie, State Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), members of the National Assembly, and various community leaders, all celebrating this pivotal step toward resolving Ughelli’s traffic crisis.
