In a significant move to strengthen the role of traditional institutions in governance, Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, presented 65 brand new Sports Utility Vehicles (SUVs) to traditional rulers across the state on Wednesday.
This initiative underscores the vital contribution of these monarchs in maintaining peace and stability within their communities.
The ceremony, held at the Government House in Asaba, featured the handover of 60 brand new Toyota Prados and five Land Cruisers, designed to facilitate the crucial work of royal fathers in their respective domains.
Governor Oborevwori described the SUVs as “tools of service” that will aid the traditional rulers in efficiently carrying out their responsibilities.
“This day is highly symbolic for our administration,” the Governor stated, acknowledging that traditional leaders represent a unique class of governance figures whose invaluable contributions are often overlooked.
He emphasized their roles as more than just custodians of culture, highlighting their importance as effective intermediaries between the government and grassroots communities.
In expressing his gratitude to the traditional rulers, Governor Oborevwori said, “I can confidently state that traditional rulers have made governance easier and more effective in Delta State.
Your commitment to peace and progress is commendable.” He noted that these leaders play a crucial role in mobilizing communities, managing disputes, and collaborating with security agencies, often without seeking recognition or reward.
The Governor explained that the selection of robust SUVs was intentional, aimed at equipping traditional rulers to navigate the challenging terrains they often encounter.
“These vehicles are not luxuries; they are tools of service, designed for strength and functionality,” he asserted.
This presentation aligns with the Governor’s broader commitment to inclusive governance under the MORE Agenda, particularly emphasizing Opportunities for All.
He reiterated his administration’s dedication to social intervention programs, which have reached over 307,600 vulnerable individuals through the D-CARES initiative, as well as providing grants to local traders and monthly stipends for 10,000 widows across the state.
“Every segment of our population has been touched,” the Governor stated, calling the gesture to traditional rulers a reflection not of favoritism, but of fairness and recognition of their essential roles.
Delta’s Deputy Governor, Sir Monday Onyeme, reiterated the significance of the vehicle presentation as a demonstration of the Oborevwori administration’s respect for traditional institutions, which play a crucial role in fostering peace, unity, and stability.
Traditional leaders expressed heartfelt appreciation for the Governor’s gesture, noting that the vehicles will significantly enhance their ability to fulfill their traditional duties efficiently.
HRM Major General Felix Mujakperuo (Rtd.), Chairman of the Delta State Council of Traditional Rulers, remarked that the presentation is a timely intervention that bolsters grassroots governance and peace-building efforts, further affirming the enduring partnership between traditional rulers and the government.
With this initiative, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori reaffirms the vital role of traditional institutions in Delta State, emphasizing that with better tools, they can continue to serve their communities effectively and foster a harmonious environment for all citizens.
