Governor Sheriff Oborevwori is taking a bold approach to governance in Delta State, addressing insecurity at its roots, through quality education and strategic infrastructural development.

His administration has made significant investments in higher institutions and technical education, ensuring that young people have access to opportunities that keep them engaged, skilled, and far from criminal activities.

This was revealed on Monday, March 10, 2025, by the State Commissioner for Works, Rural and Riverine Development, and Public Information, Mr. Charles Aniagwu, during a press briefing in Asaba, the state capital.

The Governor who led the State Executive Council members on an inspection tour to the Southern Delta University, Ozoro, Isoko north local government area of the State visited the Faculty of Medical Science and Faculty of Health Sciences which have seen rapid progress, with one building fully completed and another reaching full roofing level.

“the amount of work that had been carried out in the Faculty of Medical Science, in the Faculty of Health Sciences, where not only that a full block has been completed, an additional block is also being built and have hit a full roofing level, with accompanying infrastructure that can provide electricity and water to that particular building”.

These projects, supported by essential infrastructure like electricity and water, underscore the government’s commitment to building world-class institutions.

More impressively, Delta State is expanding its educational facilities faster than the current student population, an intentional strategy to prepare for growth and ensure sustainable development.

Aniagwu who was flanked by the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Olorogun Sir. Festus Ahon, disclosed that the Governor also commended the university’s management for attracting additional projects beyond government funding.

He said his proactive governance style has ensured that institutions in the state do not suffer from prolonged strikes, as their needs are met before they even request support.

Orerokpe Campus: A Beacon of Progress

The transformation continued at the Orerokpe campus, where multiple structures have been completed.

The Public Information Commissioner revealed that by September, the campus would be fully ready to admit new students, reinforcing the government’s commitment to making higher education accessible.

He noted that for those doubting the Governor’s impact, this development stands as undeniable proof of his dedication to educational advancement.

Technical Education as a Tool for Security

He stated that Omadino Technical College, remains a landmark institution in Warri South, Delta South Senatorial District.

According to him, he college is fully equipped and will welcome students in September. Governor Oborevwori made it clear: his administration sees education as a key weapon against insecurity.

Aniagwu pointed out that the governor understands that crime is often driven by a lack of opportunities, especially among young people.

He said by investing in education, both academic and technical, he is providing alternatives to crime and ensuring that Delta’s youth are empowered with skills to thrive in the economy.

“And our first spot of call on the second day of the special is the Technical College in Omadino. This time, note that the earlier projects I mentioned, cut across the three Senatorial districts. Now we have proceeded to Warri South in the Delta South Senatorial districts.

“The technical school in Omadino is ready. And by September, we are quite optimistic that students will also find their way to that particular institution.

“And the governor was clear, even as he was very clear the previous day, that his administration will continue to deploy education as a tool to fight insecurity.

“Because he believes that oftentimes, insecurity is perpetuated largely among certain persons within certain age brackets.

“And once we are able to provide education for this class of persons, they will not have enough time to begin to think of crime and possibly navigate towards criminality.
That institution could pass for a university in a number of states in this country”.

A Model for Other States

Governor Oborevwori’s approach is a blueprint for how education can be used as a long-term solution to insecurity.

His investments in infrastructure, proactive funding, and strategic expansion of learning institutions are creating a future where young people are engaged, skilled, and less susceptible to criminal activities.

At a time when many states struggle with strikes, underfunding, and deteriorating infrastructure, Delta State stands out as a model of how visionary leadership can transform education into a force for security, progress, and development.
