Governorship candidate on the platform of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), in the March 18th 2023 election in Delta State, Olorogun Barr. Kenneth Gbagi, FNIM, OON, has congratulated the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Delta State Council, on the outcome of the election which saw Comrade Churchill Oyowe, as the newly elected State Council Chairman.
The former Minister of State for Education in a congratulatory message contained in a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Kenneth Orusi, on Thursday October 19th 2023, commended the Union for displaying high professionalism and peaceful disposition in the keenly contested election.
The multiple award winning achiever and owner of Nayee Group of Companies that houses Nayee Press Limited, Nayee Publishing Company and Nayee Law Publication Limited, reiterated that ‘press freedom is an irreducible minimum in a democracy that would flourish.
He, however, warned that such freedom must be used responsibly.
He also acknowledged the formidable role the media play in shaping and influencing the course of events in any society.
The former Chairman, Legal Aid Council Nigeria, reminded the NUJ leadership that they owe the state a duty to hold leaders accountable to the people.
The renowned Criminologist urged the media to forge greater unity in the Union and engage in productive dialogue to resolve any issue inimical to the progress of the body.
“Ensure that you keep to your electioneering promises to your members because it is the scale on which your administration will be evaluated.
“On behalf of my family and the SDP, I heartily congratulate you on your well deserved victory and pray that you take the Union to an enviable height from where you met it”, Gbagi, said.
