FLOOD DISASTER: Omosuomo, Okuama Communities Submerged as Residents Cry Out For Urgent Government Intervention

The devastating impact of flooding in Delta State has worsened, with Omosuomo and Okuama communities in Ughelli South Local Government Area now completely submerged, leaving residents stranded and in dire need of help.

Both riverine communities have been overrun by rising floodwaters, displacing hundreds of families and destroying homes, farmlands, schools, and critical infrastructure.

The situation has plunged the affected residents into severe hardship, with many now seeking refuge in neighboring towns and on higher grounds.

Community leaders have described the disaster as “tragic and unbearable,” calling on the Delta State Government, the Ughelli South Local Government Council, State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to swiftly intervene through emergency relief and rehabilitation support.

“This flood has taken everything from us — our houses, farms, and schools are all underwater. We have nowhere to go. We are pleading with the government to come to our rescue,” lamented one displaced resident.

Leaders of Omosuomo and Okuama communities have also appealed to well-meaning Nigerians, corporate bodies, and humanitarian organizations to extend relief materials such as food items, clothing, bedding, and medical supplies to affected families.

The disaster, reportedly triggered by prolonged heavy rainfall and the overflow of nearby rivers, has continued to spread across low-lying areas of Delta State, raising fears of a wider humanitarian crisis if urgent intervention is delayed.

Residents are calling for the deployment of emergency response teams to assess the level of destruction, provide temporary shelters, and initiate long-term flood management and control measures to prevent future recurrence.

As the people of Omosuomo and Okuama endure the painful aftermath of nature’s fury, the tragedy underscores the pressing need for sustainable environmental management and proactive disaster preparedness across Delta State.
