In a bid to address the rising disregard for environmental laws in Delta State, the Delta State Capital Territory Development Agency (DSCTDA), in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment, the Environmental Task Force, and the Waste Management Board, conducted a comprehensive monitoring and supervision exercise during this month’s Environmental Sanitation Day.
The initiative aimed to curb the indiscriminate disposal of waste and ensure compliance with environmental regulations.
The Director General of DSCTDA, Chief Patrick Ukah, through the agency’s Environmental Task Force, led a team to key locations, including Nnebisi Road, Inter-Bua Roundabout, Koka Axis, Federal College Road, Okpanam, and Ibusa, to assess the level of adherence to the state’s environmental laws.
During the exercise, environmental officers were actively engaged on-site, educating residents on proper waste disposal practices and enforcing compliance where necessary.
Defaulting individuals, facility owners, landlords, tenants, and occupants who violated environmental regulations were issued abatement notices.
This measure was taken to ensure that offenders take immediate steps to address the infractions.
The enforcement team emphasized the importance of maintaining a clean and healthy environment as part of the state government’s commitment to sustainable urban development.
Mr. Isaac Nwosu, Head of Environment at DSCTDA, who led the team of environmental officers, described the exercise as a critical step towards instilling discipline and promoting environmental hygiene across the state.
He reiterated that the monitoring initiative would be a continuous effort, with strict sanctions awaiting defaulters in line with the state’s environmental laws.
Residents were advised to prioritize cleanliness and proper waste management to avoid penalties.
The DSCTDA pledged to sustain its commitment to creating a cleaner and healthier environment while urging citizens to cooperate with the agency to achieve its goal of a more sustainable Delta State.
