The Delta Online Publishers Forum (DOPF) has commended the Delta State House of Assembly for the successful passage of the Delta State Community Security Corps Agency Bill, describing it as a bold and necessary step toward tackling insecurity and safeguarding lives and livelihoods across the state.

In a statement jointly signed by its Chairman, Emmanuel Enebeli, and Secretary, Shedrack Onitsha, DOPF expressed appreciation to the House leadership and all members for their responsiveness to the security concerns of Deltans.

The Forum emphasized that the bill’s passage represents a proactive and people-oriented legislative action that resonates with the prevailing demands for a grassroots-based security framework.

“For years, DOPF has consistently advocated a comprehensive, community-driven approach to security, particularly one tailored to address rural banditry, kidnapping, herder-farmer conflicts, and other criminal threats. This bill marks a pivotal moment in that advocacy,” the statement read.

DOPF noted that the creation of the Community Security Corps will provide a structured and legally backed mechanism for recruiting, training, and deploying local security operatives who possess firsthand knowledge of their communities’ terrain and dynamics.

This, the Forum said, will not only enhance intelligence gathering and response but also help restore confidence among rural dwellers who have lived in fear for too long.

The Forum further called on Governor Sheriff Oborevwori to expedite assent to the bill to enable swift implementation.

“Timely assent to this legislation will ensure that the state begins immediate action on operationalizing the Corps, offering a sense of hope and protection to communities grappling with insecurity,” the Forum added.

DOPF also urged the state government to ensure robust structures for implementation, including adequate funding, transparent recruitment processes, and professional oversight.

It emphasized the importance of synergy between the new Corps, conventional security agencies, traditional rulers, and community leaders to ensure statewide effectiveness across the 25 local government areas.

The statement concluded by highlighting the link between rural security and agricultural revival.

“Restoring peace to our farmlands will drive up food production, strengthen agribusiness, and contribute meaningfully to food security in Delta State.”

DOPF pledged its full support for public enlightenment campaigns on the provisions and benefits of the new law, underscoring its commitment to informing and empowering the people of Delta State.
