The Delta State Capital Territory Development Agency (DSCTDA) has sustained its aggressive flood mitigation and evacuation exercise across Asaba and adjoining communities, as part of a comprehensive strategy to address seasonal flooding in the state capital.
Led by its Director General, Mr. Patrick Ukah, the agency has ramped up efforts to clear obstructed drainage systems, demolish illegal structures, and desilt key water channels in flood-prone areas.
Mr. Isaac Nwosu, Head of Environment at the agency, supervised Tuesday’s operation, which covered major locations such as Okpanam Road, DBS Junction, NTA Road, Aratha Table Water Road, Ogbe Awele Street, WACCE Road, CBN/Library Road, and Dafiaghorm Okpakor Street.
He noted that the exercise is part of the state government’s broader strategy to proactively manage flood risks during the rainy season.
“Our priority is to ensure the free flow of stormwater and reduce the impact of flooding throughout the capital territory. This is a sustained and coordinated effort, and we are already seeing positive results,” Nwosu stated during a media briefing at one of the sites.
In a statement, Mr. Ukah reiterated the agency’s commitment to improving urban resilience through responsible environmental practices.
He cautioned residents against dumping refuse in drainages and constructing buildings on waterways, warning that violators will face strict penalties.
The ongoing intervention has received commendation from residents. Mrs. Uju Eze, a trader at NTA Road, described the effort as a welcome relief.
“This is something we’ve been waiting for. We suffer every rainy season, and it’s encouraging to see real action being taken,” she said.
The DSCTDA is appealing to residents to support the initiative by adhering to environmental regulations, participating in monthly sanitation exercises, and promptly reporting cases of blocked drains or illegal structures.
The exercise is expected to continue throughout the week, targeting other vulnerable areas across the capital territory.
