Delta Ranked ‘Least Developed State’ In South-South — Report

According to the latest state by state ranking in terms of development, road network, industrialization, youth employment and economic growth, Delta State scored extremely low among other states in the South-South geo-political zone.

The state by state ranking was done by an Abuja based non-governmental organization.

In the ranking, Rivers State came 1st, with Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Edo and Bayelsa states following in that order. Delta State lagged behind at 6th position in the ranking.

The criteria used for the ranking were as follows: development, road network, industrialization, youth employment and finally, economic growth.

According to the ranking, Delta State scored 21% in development, 42% in road network, 1% in industrialization, 5% in youth employment and 27% in economic growth, thereby making the state to take last position (6th) in the ranking, behind Rivers, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Edo and Bayelsa States.

Rivers State took 1st position in the ranking, scoring 87% in road network, 83% in development, 94% in industrialization, 62% in youth employment and 85% in economic growth.

Akwa Ibom State came 2nd in the ranking, scoring 81% in road network, 83% in industrialization, 60% in youth employment, 81% in development and 79% in economic growth.

Despite the huge federal allocations from the Federal Government viz-a-viz Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), Delta State governed by the immediate past governor, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa still took 6th position which was the last position out of the six states in the South-South geo-political zone, the report said.
