The Delta State Police Command on Tuesday, December 2, 2025, joined police formations nationwide to commemorate 70 years of women serving in the Nigeria Police Force, marking the milestone with a symbolic 5km Walkathon in Asaba dedicated to raising awareness and strengthening advocacy against Gender-Based Violence (GBV).

The commemorative walk, led by senior female officers, drew participation from women police personnel across divisions and specialised units, alongside male colleagues, civil society partners, and residents who marched in solidarity with survivors of GBV.

The event also celebrated the contributions of the pioneering women who joined the Force in 1955 and paved the way for decades of service, leadership, and professional excellence.

Speaking during the event, Commissioner of Police, CP Olufemi Abaniwonda, highlighted the Command’s continued commitment to gender-responsive policing and the protection of vulnerable groups.

He stressed that the 70-year milestone is not only a celebration of history but a call to action to strengthen support systems for survivors and ensure justice for victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, child abuse, trafficking, and other forms of gender-based harm.

CP Abaniwonda praised female officers for their discipline, dedication, and critical roles in investigations, community policing, crime prevention, and victim care across Delta State.

He reaffirmed that tackling GBV remains one of the Command’s top priorities, urging the public to speak up, report incidents promptly, and partner with the police in addressing the rising concerns around gender-related violence.

The Command also used the occasion to reinforce its commitment to collaboration with stakeholders, including NGOs, rights groups, community leaders, and government agencies, to eliminate GBV in all its forms.

Residents were encouraged to report all cases of domestic or gender-based violence at the nearest police station or through the Command’s emergency hotline: 08036684974.

SP Bright Edafe, the Police Public Relations Officer, reiterated that the Delta State Police Command remains dedicated to building a safer, more inclusive, and secure state for all, as it continues to honour the legacy and growing impact of women in the Nigeria Police Force.
