The Delta State Orientation and Communications Bureau and the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) have agreed to collaborate on a statewide sensitization campaign to encourage residents to participate actively in the forthcoming National Identification Number (NIN) registration exercise.
The agreement was reached on Thursday during a courtesy visit by the Delta State Coordinator of NIMC, Mrs Grace Obels-Robinson, to the Director General of the Delta State Orientation and Communications Bureau, Dr Fred Latimore Oghenesivbe, Esq., at his office.
Speaking during the meeting, Oghenesivbe emphasised the strategic importance of the NIN as a critical tool for national development and security.
He noted that beyond serving as a reliable means of identification, the NIN is essential for effective planning of social welfare programmes, generation of credible population data and accurate capture of taxable income for both state and federal governments.
The State Government commended President Bola Tinubu for approving the mass registration of all unregistered Nigerians, describing the initiative as a major step towards ensuring that every citizen is properly documented at unit, ward, local government and state levels.
The Bureau Director General further recommended the introduction of NIN cards embedded with chips containing comprehensive citizens’ data, in line with global best practices.
According to him, such innovation would enable security agencies to conduct instant background checks by integrating criminal records where necessary, thereby strengthening Nigeria’s internal security architecture.
Oghenesivbe assured the Commission of the Bureau’s readiness to work closely with NIMC to sensitise Deltans ahead of the exercise, stressing that effective public enlightenment would enhance participation and overall success of the registration process.
Earlier, Mrs Obels-Robinson said the purpose of her visit was to seek the Bureau’s support and collaboration in mobilising residents for the forthcoming ward-to-ward NIN registration exercise across the state.
She disclosed that the exercise is scheduled to commence on January 19, 2026, and would focus on unregistered Deltans, including newly born babies, children and adults.
According to her, the registration exercise is expected to run for six weeks across all wards in Delta State.
