…project spurs youth employment, infrastructure growth
In a bid to strengthen sports infrastructure and enhance youth engagement in Delta State, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori on Saturday conducted an inspection of the ongoing reconstruction of the Warri Township Stadium, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to quality and timely project delivery.
Speaking to journalists at the site, the governor expressed satisfaction with the pace of work and confidence in the contractor’s capacity to deliver a state-of-the-art sports facility.
He noted that over 176 local youths had already been engaged, demonstrating the economic impact of the reconstruction.
“We are pleased with the progress so far. This project is already benefiting residents, and when completed, Warri people will be proud to host events in a modern stadium,” Oborevwori said.
The governor highlighted that the initial plan for a brand-new facility was revised in favour of a comprehensive renovation due to limited space.
However, key upgrades, including a hospitality suite, have been integrated into the design to meet international standards.
Facilities under reconstruction include:
A FIFA-standard football pitch
Steelwork in the main bowl
Underground drainage systems
An Olympic-size swimming pool
A modern indoor sports hall
Oborevwori emphasized that beyond serving as a hub for sports and entertainment, the revamped stadium will also boost Warri’s profile in national sports, especially with Warri Wolves Football Club securing promotion to the Premier League.
His visit, he said, was aimed at ensuring contractor accountability and compliance with the delivery timeline.
Also speaking, Engr. Olaruwaju Adeleke, Managing Director of Peculiar Concern Limited, the project contractor, disclosed that the steelwork was fully completed, and work on the pitch was in progress.
“We are now three months into the job. Except for a few open areas, all steel fabrication and erection have been done. We expect the running track and pitch grassing to be completed by December,” he said.
Although the stadium may not be ready for use in the current football season, Adeleke assured that it would be fully operational by the next season.
> “The league season is fast approaching, so it may not serve Warri Wolves this time. However, we are optimistic the team will return to their home ground next season,” he added.
