The Delta State Government has reiterated its unwavering commitment to investing in sports infrastructure, training facilities, and grassroots development programmes aimed at nurturing future champions.

Governor Sheriff Oborevwori gave the assurance on Tuesday, October 28, 2025, at the St. Patrick’s College field in Asaba, where he performed the ceremonial kick-off of the 2025 edition of the Zenith Bank Delta Headmasters’ Cup Football Competition.

Represented by his Chief of Staff, Hon. Prince Johnson Erijo, the Governor said Delta would continue to hold its position as Nigeria’s number one sports state by sustaining robust investments in youth and school sports through the Delta State Sports Commission.

“Delta has always been at the top of the sports league in Nigeria, and we intend to keep that winning streak alive,” he said.

“The Headmasters’ Cup has become a flagship tournament for grassroots sports development and youth empowerment in our state.

“We appreciate Zenith Bank for its consistent partnership and investment in our children’s future.”

Governor Oborevwori emphasized that the initiative was about more than football, it was about building discipline, teamwork, and character among young players.

He lauded Zenith Bank for demonstrating that corporate bodies could make a lasting social impact through collaboration with government.

The Governor noted that over the years, the competition had produced several promising young footballers who have gone on to represent Delta and Nigeria in age-grade championships.

“This is one of the core values of our MORE Agenda,” he added. “When we invest in the energy and potential of our children, we are investing in a brighter and stronger Delta State.

“Sports remain one of the greatest unifying forces in society, bringing together people across all divides.”

Oborevwori charged the young players to play with passion, discipline, and fairness, reminding them that many football legends began their journey on school fields just like theirs.

“Dream big and play hard. With determination and humility, the sky will not be your limit, it will be your starting point,” he said.

In his remarks, the Commissioner for Primary Education, Dr. Kingsley Ashibogwu, described the event as another testament to the State Government’s commitment to youth development, talent discovery, and educational advancement through sports.

He said the Headmasters’ Cup had evolved into a vital platform for identifying young talents while instilling teamwork and the spirit of fair play.

“Beyond medals and trophies, this competition builds character, integrity, and excellence,” Ashibogwu said.

“True victory lies not just in winning matches, but in upholding the values of unity, courage, and sportsmanship.”

He also applauded Zenith Bank Plc for its steadfast partnership, saying it exemplifies the positive results possible when the private and public sectors team up for a shared vision.

Representing the sponsor, Zenith Bank Plc reaffirmed that the Headmasters’ Cup aligns perfectly with its Corporate Social Responsibility pillars, education, youth empowerment, and community development.

The bank commended the Oborevwori administration for creating a conducive environment for sports and education to thrive.

Meanwhile, the opening match of the 2025 edition saw Ezemese Primary School, Ibusa, Oshimili north local government area of the State, edge past Okwe Primary School, Okwe, Oshimili south local government area of the State with a narrow 1–0 victory, setting the tone for another exciting tournament of youthful talent, passion, and promise.
