Delta Government Caution Children Against Societal Ills

Children have been urged to avoid peers in school and their environments with corruptible tendencies so as not to destroy their future.

The Delta State government gave the charge on the International Children’s Day held on 27th May 2022, at the Cenotaph, Asaba, the State capital.

The 2022 Children’s Day had its theme as “Strengthening Supportive System for the Protection of the Nigeria Child: “A WAKE UP CALL”. was attended by the wife of the State Governor Dame Edith Okowa.

Speaking at the event the state governor, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa said in line with this year’s theme, everyone should strategize and strengthen existing support system in the state and beyond.

The governor who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Chief Patrick Ukah, noted that, despite legal measures put in place, the state and indeed the nation still witness negative social vices on the part of Children.

Be called on the need to strengthen the family unit which is the home base for proper up bringing and creating an enabling environment for development.

He therefore, advised the children to be good ambassadors of the state and shun any evil act that could ruin their future.

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Women Affairs, Community and Social Development, Mrs. Oghenekevwe Agas said the theme was apt, taking into consideration the challenges faced by the children, where insecurity, kidnapping, addiction, violence and other social vices have become a threat to the upbringing of the Nigeria Child.

Mrs. Agas appealed to stakeholders to include caregivers, traditional institutions, religious leaders and parents to join hands with government at all levels to institute policies and programme to promote and enhances the development of not only the Delta Child but also the Nigeria Child

She urged children to shun all negative vices inimical to their development while disclosing that the ministry’s door is open to offer support to the Delta Child.

In an interview, Dame Minnie Igbrude called on the government and parents most be up to their responsibility by ensuring that Children are given their right of place in the society.

She said, Investing in our future means investing in our children — which is why the United Nations has designated today as Universal Children’s Day.

“It’s a time to promote togetherness around the world, awareness of the problems children face in every corner of the globe, and improve the welfare for all children”.
