It is the believe of the Delta State Government that youths involved in internet fraud could still be redeemed from the terrible ways of life in which they are now enmeshed.
The Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Chief Patrick Ukah, stated this in his office when the committee to Proffer Solutions to the Menace of Internet fraudsters in the state presented their report to the state government.
Chief Ukah said that the government has been greatly disturbed by the rising trend of Internet fraud which has now acquired notorious name, yahoo boys.
The SSG stated that in the recent past, the state government had set up advocacy and mentoring teams in schools across the state as a way of reorienting the youths to embrace good values.
He said that the state government decided to frontally deal with the menace of internet fraudster through the constitution of this broad-based committee to holistically examine the problem with a view to proffer more realistic solutions, beyond the normal legal actions against fraud offenders which have proved to be inadequate in addressing the problem.
Chief Ukah thanked and commended members of the committee for the timeliness in completing the assignment and assured Deltans that the state government will study the report with a view to implement its recommendations for the good of the society and benefits of generations of the people.
Earlier, the Chairman of the committee and Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Isaiah Bozimor Esq., said the committee made 28 recommendations on how to tackle internet fraud in the state.
The Chairman said some of the recommendations will require legislative actions, while others can be implemented through approval of the State Executive Council.
He expressed optimism that the state government will be resolute in the fight against internet fraudster and set an example for other jurisdiction to follow by accepting and implementing the recommendations in the report.
The Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice showered gratitude and appreciation on the Governor of the state, Senator Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, for the opportunity given to him and other members of the committee to serve.
The highlight of the event was the presentation of the committee’s report to the SSG by the Chairman.
