The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Delta State Council, has joined millions of citizens at home and abroad in celebrating the 34th anniversary of the creation of Delta State.
Delta, carved out of the defunct Bendel State on August 27, 1991, has over the past three decades evolved into one of Nigeria’s most strategic states—renowned for its vital contribution to the nation’s oil wealth and for its rich cultural heritage.
In a statement signed by the Council Chairman, Churchill Oyowe, and Acting Secretary, Josephine Omodior, the NUJ noted that successive administrations in the state have recorded varying levels of progress in key sectors including education, healthcare, infrastructure, sports, youth and women development.
The Union particularly commended the administration of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for deepening infrastructural renewal, strengthening healthcare delivery, and empowering youths, widows and the elderly through the implementation of his M.O.R.E. Agenda, Meaningful Development, Opportunities for All, Realistic Reforms, and Enhanced Peace and Security.
While acknowledging these achievements, the NUJ stressed the urgent need for Delta State to diversify its economy beyond dependence on oil revenues and federal allocations.
It identified agriculture as a critical growth sector, where Delta enjoys clear comparative advantages that can drive food security, job creation, and industrialisation.
Citing the Maputo Declaration of 2003, which recommended a minimum of 10 percent of budgetary allocations to agriculture, the Council urged both state and local governments to deliberately channel resources into the sector.
It also called for decisive measures to protect genuine farmers, curb herders’ incursions into farmlands, prevent crop destruction, and tackle kidnappings that continue to threaten rural livelihoods.
“At 34, Delta must consolidate its gains and courageously confront its gaps. A secure, agriculturally productive, and industrially vibrant Delta is possible,” the statement read in part.
The NUJ Delta State Council praised the resilience of Deltans, the vision of past and present leaders, and the ongoing efforts of the Oborevwori administration. It reaffirmed its commitment to working with stakeholders in advancing the state’s peace, productivity, and prosperity.
“Happy 34th Anniversary, Delta State!” the Council declared
