The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), South South Zone, has strongly condemned the recent acts of violence perpetrated against women and girls under the guise of cultural observance, describing the incidents as disturbing, unacceptable, and a gross violation of human rights.

In a statement issued by its leadership, the association expressed deep concern over what it termed a troubling trend that endangers the safety, dignity, and mental well-being of women, who already face heightened vulnerabilities in society.

NAWOJ declared that it would not remain silent in the face of injustice, misconduct, or abuse in any form.

While commending the efforts of the state government and security agencies for their swift response, the association called for a thorough, transparent, and impartial investigation into the incidents.

It stressed that all individuals found culpable must be brought to justice in accordance with the law, emphasizing that accountability is essential to restoring public confidence and preventing a recurrence.

NAWOJ further urged key stakeholders, including media organizations, civil society groups, and government institutions, to reinforce their commitment to upholding moral standards and safeguarding the rights and dignity of all citizens.

Reaffirming its stance, the association reiterated its unwavering commitment to advocating for justice, accountability, and the protection of fundamental human rights, while standing in solidarity with victims and continuing to speak out against all forms of abuse without fear or favour.

The statement was jointly signed by Stella Macaulay, Zonal Vice Chairperson, and Eunice Emeyazia, Zonal Secretary.
