Officials of the Delta State Waste Management Board have carried out a routine waste evacuation exercise at Kwale Park, situated within the bustling Koka Junction axis of Asaba, as part of renewed efforts to strengthen environmental sanitation across the state capital.
The cleanup operation, conducted on Thursday, April 9, 2026, drew significant attention from commuters and traders, as officials cleared heaps of accumulated refuse that had posed both environmental and public health risks.
The initiative forms part of a broader strategy by the Board to enhance waste management systems and ensure a cleaner urban environment.
Speaking during the exercise, the Acting Chairman of the Board, Hon. Felix Erhimedafe, reiterated the agency’s unwavering commitment to maintaining a healthy and sanitary environment for residents.
He stressed that the Board remains resolute despite the growing challenges associated with increased waste generation in urban areas.
“We are determined to sustain this momentum in environmental sanitation,” Erhimedafe stated.
“Our objective is to make every part of Delta State clean, safe, and livable.
The intervention at Koka Junction represents just one of several measures we are implementing to achieve this goal.”
Also addressing stakeholders, the Supervisor of the exercise, Stephen Uwanabi, underscored the critical role of public cooperation in achieving effective waste management outcomes.
According to him, the success of the Board’s initiatives depends largely on the active participation of residents and businesses.
“We call on residents to support our efforts by disposing of waste responsibly and engaging only registered Private Sector Participants (PSPs),” Uwanabi said.
“Such collaboration is vital to ensuring efficient and sustainable waste collection and disposal across the state.”
Residents and traders within the Koka Junction area commended the Board for the timely intervention, noting that the location had long required urgent attention.
Many also advocated for sustained sanitation efforts and stricter enforcement of environmental laws to curb indiscriminate dumping.
The Delta State Waste Management Board, while reaffirming its commitment, urged the public to embrace responsible waste disposal practices, emphasizing that environmental cleanliness is a shared responsibility essential for public health and sustainable urban development.
