Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has emphasized the significance of technical and vocational education as a vital strategy for addressing youth unemployment in Nigeria.
He noted that graduates from such programs are poised to become skilled professionals, entrepreneurs, and employers rather than job seekers.
Governor Oborevwori made these remarks on Monday during the inauguration of the newly completed Model Technical College in Omadino, located in the Warri South Local Government Area of the state.
He described the institution as a flagship investment in technical and vocational education by his administration.
He articulated that some achievements are best appreciated through observation rather than mere discussion, highlighting that his administration had successfully delivered major projects over two years without incurring debt or placing additional burdens on the citizens of Delta State.
“I am often amazed at how much we have achieved within a short span without borrowing or imposing challenges on the people.
“This project stands as a testament to prudent management, as contractors were paid promptly, which ensured timely delivery,” the governor stated.
Oborevwori revealed that academic activities had commenced at the college prior to its formal inauguration, showcasing the readiness and operational capability of the facility.
He asserted that the Model Technical College in Omadino signifies a significant milestone in advancing technical and vocational education in the state.
Its infrastructure, including internal roads, administrative blocks, classrooms, workshops, and laboratories, exemplifies the administration’s commitment to quality education through clear vision, strategic planning, and disciplined execution.
The governor expressed gratitude to his predecessor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, for initiating the project, while also affirming his government’s commitment to ensure its completion to the highest standards.
“I am thrilled to see this beautiful edifice now a reality. We give God all the glory. Any student, lecturer, or staff member would take pride in being associated with this institution,” he said.
He praised the caliber of training at the college, noting the confidence and composure displayed by a student who spoke at the event as evidence of effective instruction and engagement.
Governor Oborevwori highlighted the importance of modern educational infrastructure in creating an ideal learning environment that enhances both student performance and teacher effectiveness, instilling a sense of pride in the school community.
“With the high-quality facilities available here, I am confident that students of this college will be able to compete on a global scale. All workshops and laboratories are equipped with state-of-the-art facilities,” he remarked.
Reinforcing his administration’s commitment to education as part of the MORE Agenda, the governor assured the people of Delta State that efforts would continue to enhance educational infrastructure to provide access to comprehensive, functional education and skills relevant to a global context.
He urged the management, staff, students, and host communities to prioritize the maintenance of the facilities, emphasizing that government property represents the collective investment of taxpayers and must be safeguarded against neglect and vandalism.
The State Commissioner for Technical Education, Mr. Smart Ufoh, earlier described the Omadino Model Technical College as more than merely a technical school, calling it a bold statement of purpose and a symbol of transformation.
The school boasts 12 classrooms and nine fully equipped workshops to support learning and skills development.
It also includes residential and welfare facilities such as two hostel blocks, staff quarters, a principal’s lodge, and accommodations for corps members, providing a conducive environment for students and staff alike.
Additional amenities comprise a dining hall, clinic, spacious school hall, and recreational facilities including a football pitch and a basketball court, complemented by essential support structures like a generator house and operational quarters, highlighting the institution’s readiness for effective teaching, learning, and administration.
Ufoh announced that academic activities commenced in September 2025 with the admission of students into Junior Technical One, ensuring that the sophisticated facilities are actively utilized and maintained.
He reported overwhelming support from the Omadino community and surrounding areas.
In his remarks, Hon. Weyinmi Agbateyiniro, Chairman of the Warri South Local Government Council, expressed deep appreciation to Governor Oborevwori for his impactful leadership and numerous development initiatives throughout Warri and Delta State.
He described the commissioning of the Model Technical College as a landmark achievement, along with significant infrastructure improvements, including the Trans-Warri Road and Bridges, enhanced road networks, drainage systems that have alleviated perennial flooding, and the nearly completed Warri Modern Stadium.
Agbateyiniro commended the governor for his fairness, inclusivity, and focus on people-centered governance, noting that in under three years, development projects have reached every senatorial district, federal constituency, local government, and community in the state.
He assured the governor of the people of Warri South’s unwavering support and confidence in his leadership as the 2027 elections approach.
HRM Ogiame Atuwatse III, the Olu of Warri, also expressed gratitude to Governor Oborevwori for his commitment to riverine communities, urging him to continue and expand investments in education, bridges, roads, and jetties throughout the state’s riverine areas.
On behalf of the students, Miss Courtney Omotoyine described the commissioning as the realization of a long-held dream and a significant step toward securing the future of young people in Delta State and Nigeria.
She encouraged her fellow students to utilize the facilities responsibly and strive for excellence.
