Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State has wielded the big stick following Delta’s shock second-place finish at the recently concluded National Youth Games (NYG) hosted in Asaba, a departure from the state’s long-standing dominance in grassroots sports.
In an unprecedented move, the governor demoted his Executive Assistant on Sports, Mr. Festus Owhojero, to the position of Senior Special Assistant, citing incompetence and poor performance.
The demotion, observers say, signals a new era of accountability within the state’s sports administration.
Delta, historically the unrivalled powerhouse of the NYG, was dethroned by Lagos, which emerged champions to the dismay of stakeholders and fans.
The slip sparked widespread criticism over the planning and execution of the games, despite the huge resources deployed to maintain Delta’s supremacy.
At an emergency meeting with the Local Organising Committee (LOC) and sports officials, Governor Oborevwori did not mince words.
He described the state’s performance as “completely unacceptable,” stressing that Delta must not compromise its hard-earned reputation as Nigeria’s sporting capital.
Sources at the meeting revealed that the governor’s anger was further fuelled by organisational lapses that cast a shadow over the state’s ability to deliver a world-class sporting event.
His decision to demote Owhojero was described as a warning shot to other appointees: mediocrity will no longer be tolerated.
In line with his commitment to restoring Delta’s glory, Oborevwori directed the Sports Commission and LOC officials to produce a detailed report on the shortcomings of the games.
The report is expected to guide future reforms as Delta prepares to host the event again under an existing memorandum of understanding.
By demoting a top aide, the governor has sent a clear message, Delta’s sports excellence is non-negotiable, and only competence will be rewarded in his administration.
