Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State has called on real estate stakeholders to urgently reduce skyrocketing rent costs across the state.
However, concerned residents and housing advocates have urged the governor to go beyond verbal appeals and instead present an executive bill to the Delta State House of Assembly to address rent regulation through legislative action.
The governor, represented by his Chief of Staff, Mr. Johnson Erijo, made the appeal on Monday during the 13th Anniversary and Annual Convention of Property World Africa Network (PWAN) in Asaba, the state capital.
“As we reflect on PWAN’s journey, we must commend the visionary leadership that transformed this company from its humble start in 2012 to a major player in Africa’s real estate sector,” Erijo said, adding that PWAN’s ability to innovate and deliver top-quality real estate services had earned it national recognition.
Oborevwori’s representative used the occasion to highlight the rising cost of rent, especially in urban centers like Asaba, warning that the current rental rates are unsustainable for the average worker, particularly public servants.
He called on real estate developers to use innovative strategies to make housing more affordable.
“I urge you to apply your skills and creativity to find ways to lower rent and ease the burden on residents,” he appealed.
Despite the governor’s comments, critics argue that appeals alone are insufficient and that legislative action is necessary to bring real change.
They are calling on Governor Oborevwori to introduce an executive bill to the State Assembly aimed at regulating rent prices, providing incentives for affordable housing development, and protecting tenants from exploitative practices.
In her remarks at the event, Dr. Obioma Onwumere, Global President and immediate past Group Managing Director of PWAN, described the company not just as a real estate venture but as a platform for economic empowerment.
“PWAN is more than real estate; it’s an empowerment industry. Our mandate is for each affiliate to empower 10 people, who in turn empower 10 more. Through this ripple effect, PWAN is reshaping empowerment across Nigeria,” she stated.
Also speaking, the newly appointed Acting Managing Director of PWAN, Prof. Julius Oyedemi, pledged to uphold the company’s vision and called for collective support to take the company to greater heights under his leadership.
While PWAN’s contributions to real estate development were acknowledged, the broader issue of rent affordability in Delta State remains a pressing concern, with many expecting Governor Oborevwori to take decisive legislative steps rather than relying solely on appeals to real estate firms.
