In a renewed effort to enhance environmental cleanliness and public health across the capital, the Delta State Capital Territory Development Agency (DSCTDA) has intensified its sanitation enforcement drive, issuing a stern warning to the management of Ambience Mall and other commercial areas in Asaba over poor sanitary conditions.
During a recent inspection, DSCTDA officials uncovered serious lapses at Ambience Mall, including the absence of basic waste disposal infrastructure such as refuse bins and designated disposal points.
The inspection team found the rear of the plaza littered with debris, discarded materials, and unsanitary waste, posing significant environmental and health risks.
Mr. Isaac Nwosu, Head of Environment at the DSCTDA, expressed dismay at the findings, stating, “It is unacceptable for a major commercial complex to operate without adequate waste management provisions.
“This contravenes existing sanitation laws, and failure to address these issues promptly will attract strict penalties.”
The agency reiterated that its sanitation enforcement applies uniformly across all commercial and residential properties, emphasizing that no establishment would be exempted.
Property owners and business operators were urged to maintain clean surroundings and ensure proper waste disposal as part of their civic duties.
In line with its zero-tolerance policy on environmental infractions, the DSCTDA has given Ambience Mall management an ultimatum to comply with sanitation standards or face sanctions, including fines, temporary closure, or legal action.
Meanwhile, the agency’s Environmental Enforcement Team, also led by Mr. Nwosu, conducted a large-scale cleanup operation on Monday, August 4, 2025, at Ogbeogonogo Market and the Ibusa Junction area.
The exercise involved enforcing compliance among shop owners along the market corridor, from Ibusa Junction to the Oshimili South Arcade—including the removal of goods placed on road setbacks and walkways.
As part of the exercise, Mrs. Ngozi Peter, Head of Corporate Affairs at DSCTDA, led a sensitization campaign targeting market traders.
She and her team educated market women and men on the importance of environmental hygiene, responsible waste disposal, and community health.
Mr. Nwosu confirmed that the cleanup operation will continue on Tuesday, as part of a sustained strategy to restore cleanliness and order across public and commercial spaces in the Delta Capital Territory.
The DSCTDA assured residents that further inspections and enforcement actions will be carried out in other key areas, underscoring its firm commitment to building a cleaner, safer, and healthier urban environment for all.
