In a bid to improve access to quality healthcare for vulnerable citizens, 1,000 indigent residents of Oshimili South Local Government Area were officially enrolled into the Delta State Contributory Health Commission (DSCHC).

The exercise was carried out on Wednesday February 4, 2926, during a ceremony organized by Barr. Bridget Anyafulu, member representing Oshimili South State Constituency in the Delta State House of Assembly.

The Social Health Insurance Scheme is designed to provide affordable and accessible healthcare to vulnerable groups, including indigent persons who ordinarily cannot afford quality medical services.

Across Delta State, over 2.8 million people have been registered under the scheme, with approximately 30% identified as vulnerable or indigent citizens.

Speaking at the event, Dr. Isaac Akpoveta, Director General of the scheme, emphasized the importance of enrolling vulnerable populations to improve societal health and productivity.

“By ensuring that families are healthy, we strengthen communities and support progress,” he said.

Dr. Akpoveta also encouraged individuals, organizations, and philanthropic institutions to participate in the program.

“The scheme is open to everyone. With government subsidies, registration for an individual costs just ₦7,000, making it accessible to even informal sector workers such as barbers, carpenters, and artisans,” he explained.

The initiative, known as the Indigent Enrollee Adoption Initiative, aims to reduce poverty and empower vulnerable groups by facilitating access to essential health services.

Beneficiaries will enjoy subsidized healthcare, while the government continues to partner with private and public stakeholders to sustain and expand the programme.

Barr. Bridget Anyafulu, who sponsored the enrollment in her constituency, got commendations from the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Commission for her commitment to supporting programs that directly impact the lives of the vulnerable.

He further noted that access to affordable healthcare is key to building healthier families and stronger communities.

The successful registration of 1,000 indigent Deltans under the Commission, underscores Delta State’s commitment to inclusive healthcare delivery and social protection for its most vulnerable citizens.
