The member representing Ndokwa/Ukwuani Federal Constituency, at the House of Representatives, Ossai Nicholas Ossai, has moved a motion of public urgent importance on the alleged murder of a birthday celebrant identified as Gift Ojarikre, by the police in Obinomba community in Ukwuani local government area of Delta State.

The Motion which was moved under Order 8, Rule 4″ of the House of Representatives Rules, which was moved by Hon Ossai N Ossai today, Thursday, Sept 30, and was debated and adopted by the House as an Urgent Resolution for immediate implementation.

The House recalls that on October 4, 2020, a video went viral showing Officers of the disbanded Police ‘Special Anti-Robbery Squad’ (SARS), dragging two men from a hotel and shooting one of them outside, which triggered a nation-wide #EndSARS Protests that lasted for many weeks.

Also recalls that following the EndSARS Protests, the United Nations (UN) and the European Union (EU) called for the end to police brutality in Nigeria.

In particular, the UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres did urge “Security Forces to act at all times with maximum restraint”.

Sadly observes the reported atrocity of the Nigerian Police who were said to have without reasons shot sporadically in the Obinomba Community of Delta State immediately before storming a nearby hotel at about 8:30pm on Friday, September 24, 2021 to murder one Ojarikre Gift, who was celebrating his birthday in the hotel.

Also observes that the deceased Ojarikre Gift was reported to be a quiet 29 year old father of 3 who had never been armed and had a promising life that has now been brutally cut short by the Nigerian Police.

Worried that the reported murder was one too many in a series of extra judicial killings in the country, and the alleged conducts of the indicted Policemen being against the operational ethos of a modern Police Force.

Members of the House resolves and mandated the Committee on Police Affairs to urgently visit the bereaved family and to investigate the circumstances surrounding the alleged killing with a view to identifying the culprits, and to report back within three (3) weeks.

Meanwhile, the traditional ruler of Umukwata kingdom, King Friday Abaja, has visited Gift Ojarikre’s family with a promise to sponsor his four months old baby’s education to the university level.

He also disclosed that he would place Gift’s wife and mother on lifetime monthly salaries for sustenance.

“It is my duty and responsibility to protect my kingdom. Therefore, I will put all my efforts to make the Police Officer that committed the heinous crime in my kingdom a scapegoat to serve as a deterrent to unprofessional Nigerian Police Officers”.

“I am no longer working to feed myself. I am working to help my people”.

It would be recall that a 29-year-old birthday celebrant, identified as Gift was gruesomely murdered while celebrating his birthday with well-wishers at Obinomba community, Ukwuani local government area of Delta State.
