Residents of Nwodo Estate, located near Ajaji Layout in the BONSAAC area of Asaba, Delta State, were thrown into mourning following the tragic death of a young man who is believed to have taken his own life under unclear circumstances.

Sources and residents on Friday, June 27, 2025, who spoke expressed shock over the incident, describing the deceased as a quiet and seemingly stable individual.

The circumstances surrounding the suicide remain unclear, with some community members suggesting the possibility of psychological distress or even suspected spiritual or psychological manipulation.

As of the time of this report, no official statement has been released by the police or the Delta State government.

“This is not normal. From all indications, something deeper may have been at play,” one local resident said, requesting anonymity.

“We hope authorities will thoroughly investigate what happened. We were there yesterday till around to 11, when he was taken to the mortuary.

“It is police operatives from ‘B’ Division that my brother who is the chairman of the security called. So, the DPO then sent people before he was taken to the mortuary”, a very credible source who is privy to the ugly incident said.

Mental health advocates have repeatedly called for stronger awareness and support systems in Delta State and across Nigeria, particularly as suicide and depression-related cases rise among young people.

The lack of access to professional mental health services and cultural stigmas around discussing emotional struggles often leave vulnerable individuals without help until it is too late.

Community members are urging security agencies to conduct a proper investigation to determine if foul play or coercion was involved.

In the meantime, the incident has sparked a wider conversation about mental health, youth vulnerability, and the urgent need for community-based support structures.

The identity of the deceased was yet to be made public at the time of filing this report, pending official confirmation and notification of his family.

Authorities are expected to release a statement in due course as investigations continue.

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Bright Edafe, confirmed the incident with a brief response: “Confirmed.”
