A jealous Police officer identified as Mohammed Bello, has allegedly murdered his colleagues for purportedly having secret affairs with his wife in Maiduguri, Borno state.
According to Bello, the deceased officers were having romantic affair with his live-in-lover and mother of his children.
Bello who was arrested on Friday, March 4, after he gunned down four colleagues inside the police college quarters of Borno Police headquarters in the state capital told Punch after surrendering himself to the police that he regretted sparing the life of a senior officer who he claims ended his relationship.
In his words: “The OC, Provost, is still alive? I wish I saw him when I had the AK-47 with me. I regret not killing him, Wallahi. He ruined my family and I desperately wanted to kill him. He made my wife leave my house without giving me a fair hearing,” he said.
According to reports, Bello threatened to kill the Officer in Charge, Provost, Mobile Police Base 6, Maiduguri, for allegedly destroying his relationship with the mother of his three children.
It was gathered that three of the riot policemen were killed by Bello on the suspicion that they had extramarital affairs with his lover; with the fourth victim dying later after he was hit by a stray bullet from his rifle.
Bello was also said to have injured another police inspector who happens to be his brother-in-law, after he set his house and two other apartments ablaze.
The suspect, it was gathered, was formerly attached to the Borno State deputy governor’s security details and was recently transferred to the headquarters of the mobile police base as a quarter guard in the wake of an alleged mental disorder, had been living with the woman for about 10 years without meeting the conditions required to make her legally married to him.
There was a disagreement between them over the non-legal union, with Bello accusing his live-in lover of having sexual relationships with other men.
Things got to a heated point at about 7:30pm on Friday when Mohammed Bello walked to her kiosk where she sold noodles, and met three policemen and questioned her relationship with them.
Adam Usman, a resident in the area in his eyewitness account said that Bello, who became angered by the response of one of the policemen, accused them of having an affair with his lover and opened fire on them, killing them instantly.
In his words: “I was there at the Commander’s Market when the incident took place, though I was in the officers’ mess. My friend called my line and I left on time to witness the happening.
“When Oga Bello killed the three officers, everybody, including his wife took to their heels, leaving behind their two young children. He took the smallest child in his arms and walked straight to the house of his brother-in-law, who is also a police officer,” Usman added.
