A Delta State House of Assembly (DTHA), aspirant under the auspices of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP), for Oshimili North State Constituency, Mr. Kenneth Agbomah, has alleged that his arrest and detention by the State Police Command was politically motivated.

Speaking to journalists in Asaba, the State capital on Monday April 25th 2022, Agbomah, who accused the Command under Mr. Ari Mohammed Ali, of illegal detention, revealed that he was not briefed on the reason he was arrested and detained for almost one week.

He said that his arrest was politically motivated in order to skim him out from contesting the  election.

According to him, “I left my father’s house and I decided to go to my own house which is about one mile from the place. So, as I was going, when I got to the Chairman’s place, I saw one of my supporters dragging, arguing with the ward Chairman. Then, I stopped my car to find out what is going on, immediately I stopped my car, I saw my supporters, they started fighting.

“I saw one of our leaders which is my Uncle too, Mr. Uche Agbuje, with a cutlass. The next thing I saw was blood and I tried to separate the fight. The next thing I saw was that the Illah Police Division called me. I am a law abiding citizen, if the police invite me, I will expect that I will go.

“From there I was transfered to Asaba, State CID. I was detained there for almost a week before I was released. I was detained there from on the 14th, I was released on the 20th.

“I think my understanding of my arrest was politically motivated in order to stop me from continuing my political ambition. Because the screening was supposed to be on the 20th but luckily for me, it was postponed to on 27th. What I heard the police say to me is that it was politically motivated, though they didn’t mention any name to me. To my greatest surprise, they didn’t even tell me my offense.

“I was not told the reason for the arrest and who was behind the arrest. I didn’t support the incident that happened, we are brothers. My supporters were there because my name was removed from the ad-hoc delegates list, as an aspirant, my name is supposed to be there”.

Also speaking, his Counsel, Barr. Favour Ajuebor said the police has no right to arrest his client for the offence he didn’t commit. The only thing the police told him was to produce who inflicted assault on the leader..

According to him, “under the Criminal law, you cannot be held responsible for the offence of another person. Where that law is being applied, we don’t know.

“We will restrain the police from interfering on the matter of this nature that doesn’t have any express interpretation as to why he is being held in custody.

“Action will commence in the shortest possible time to ensure that his right is no longer infringed upon and to give him the leverage and fair level ground to participate effectively in the forthcoming election.”

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Bright Edafe said: “he knows the truth, he is just lying to the media. He conspired with his brother to assault a man.

“They almost blind the man’s eyes. The man is still in the hospital as we speak and that was why he was arrested but eventually he was granted bail”, the image maker revealed.
