Delta state government said the Nigerian Correctional Center, Warri which was recently razed down during the #EndSARS protest would be rehabilitated.
The State Deputy Governor, Barr. Kingsley Otuaro, affirmed this on Tuesday 27th October 2020, during his on the spot assessment of the facilities.
According to Special Assistant on Media, Elohor Rita Agbra, the Deputy Governor who was conducted round the centre, by the Deputy Comptroller Correctional Service, Warri, Adimabua Okonkwo, expressed shock at the level of destruction of the facilities during an attempted jail break by the inmates during #Endsars protest.
Barr. Otuaro wondered how such facility which government has put in enormous resources to build would be reduced to rubbles by the inmates.
He commended the prison officials for their conduct in managing the situation.
Otuaro added that as one who has equipped the facilities and invested in the welfare of the inmates in the past, he will not turn his back on them during the trying period.
He assured that apart from the palliatives already packaged for the inmates, the state governor, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, would quickly intervene in the reconstruction of the Centre to make it more conducive.
The Deputy Comptroller, Nigerian Correctional Service, Warri Adimabua Okonkwo, had earlier briefed the Deputy Governor on the challenges of the Centre.
He disclosed that 26 inmates escaped from the prison which has more than 1007 inmates.
He said efforts are in top gear to rearrest the escapees.
In the same vein, the Chairman, Warri south local government area, Dr. Michael Tidi, who joined the Deputy Governor during the inspection advised the leaders to be sensitive to the yearnings of the people through favourable policy implementation to avoid crises that could lead to the destruction of lives and property.
