An Appeal Court sitting in Lagos State has sentenced the sitting Senator representing Delta North Senatorial District, Peter Nwaoboshi to seven years imprisonment over money laundering allegation.
The Senator, who is the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for 2023 election cum Chairman, Senate Committee of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), was convicted by the Lagos Division of the Appeal Court on Friday, July 1, 2022.
Mr Nwaoboshi, was convicted following an appeal by the anti-graft agency, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
The agency had appealed the June 2021 ruling of Justice Chukwujekwu Aneke of the Federal High Court, Lagos.
The judge discharged and acquitted Mr Nwaoboshi, 64, of about N322 million money laundering claims filed by the EFCC, triggering the appeal.
The EFCC had alleged that N322 million of the money formed part of the proceeds of an unlawful act, claiming the fund was transferred to vendors by order of Suiming Electrical Ltd.
