Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have arrested an agent of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) and two other individuals for alleged involvement in vote buying during the Anambra State governorship election held on Saturday.

In a brief statement released on the Commission’s official Facebook page, the EFCC confirmed that the arrests were made in different parts of the state as part of its election-monitoring operation.

The suspects were identified as Emeka Ilokasia, apprehended at Ward 2, Njikoka Local Government Area; Nwachukwu Loretta, arrested at Ward 2 (Unit 008), Awkuzu, Oyi Local Government Area; and Emuka Chuwudi, picked up at Umunachi Village, Dunukofia Local Government Area.

The anti-graft agency stated that the suspects are currently undergoing interrogation and would be charged to court upon conclusion of investigations.

Saturday’s election, which was largely peaceful across most parts of Anambra State, was marred by allegations of widespread vote buying, with several major political parties accusing one another of compromising the process.

As of the time of filing this report, collation of results from all 21 local government areas was ongoing, with most polling units’ outcomes already uploaded on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Result Viewing (IReV) portal.

The EFCC reiterated its commitment to ensuring transparency in the electoral process and warned that it would continue to clamp down on individuals and groups attempting to undermine Nigeria’s democracy through financial inducements and other corrupt practices.
