The Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) and the Delta State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) have reaffirmed their commitment to fostering agricultural interest among the younger generation.

This pledge was made by the Executive Chairman of SUBEB, Hon. (Chief) Samuel Mariere, during an excursion for pupils from selected public primary and junior secondary schools in Delta North to the Royal Farm Yard, Umunede, in Ika North East Local Government Area.

Accompanied by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Agriculture, Chief George Oyefia; Permanent Secretary of SUBEB, Mr. Byron Unini; and other board directors, Mariere emphasized that agriculture has the potential to transform the nation’s economy.

He noted that this initiative builds on a previous excursion to Ophromo Farms Limited in Delta Central and South senatorial districts.

Hon. Mariere explained that the program is part of a federal and state collaborative effort to expose students to the opportunities in agriculture, ensuring they develop an interest in farming and related activities from an early age.

He highlighted agriculture as a key driver of food security, job creation, and wealth generation, urging students to embrace its prospects.

Mariere also commended the Federal and Delta State Governments for their counterpart funding, which has enabled UBEC and SUBEB to execute impactful educational programs.

He called on teachers to integrate the knowledge gained during the farm tours into their lessons.

Chief George Oyefia, the Governor’s Special Adviser on Agriculture, encouraged students to view agriculture as a lucrative career path, stating that some of the wealthiest individuals globally are farmers.
