A golf tournament aimed at paying more attention to the care given to the elderly and raise funds to support the senior citizens in the society has begun at the Ibori Golf and Country Club Asaba, Delta state.

The game tagged: “Promoting Care For The Elderly”, started Saturday 12th December 2020, would draw golfers from across the country with the elderly between the age bracket of 60-80 years.

The Founder, AGCare, Mr. Chukwuka Monye, said: “Golf is an interesting game that you use to promote different things. One of the things we wanted to do with this one was to dedicate it to promoting elderly care.

“It is the festive season, sometimes you just pick different segments of the population to focus on.

“We have just decided to dedicate this time to the elderly care. It is one of the areas we feel we don’t pay a lot of attention to.

“So, we are now using this medium to create awareness to say let us begin to give more care to the elderly.

“That is one of the reasons why we say let us host this Charity tournament. This is the first edition.

“It is an interesting lineup for the day because we have golf tournament in the morning. This is a country golf club, so the idea is that we want to do more activities here today to create awareness for Asaba.

“We will play golf in the morning, have family fun day time in the afternoon and there will be an award night in the evening. We are trying to do more to make Asaba exciting”.

He disclosed that a lot of golfers would participate in the event, “Those participating are as many as possible because we still have so many people that are registering from neighbouring states, Benin, Warri”, he said.

Captain, Ibori Golf and Country Club, Mr. Afred Ebreneyin, revealed that the Club has golfers who are in the 80s and a 90-year-old.

“It is a charity golf tournament, families are expected to be here today for the fun day but we are playing a golf tournament first as part of the Charity game in the morning.

“So, the day is divided into three; the golf tournament, the family fun day and the award night. For here, this is the first and it is very unique. In fact, I can say I was very humbled when the choice of the maiden edition was Ibori Golf and Country Club. Bringing this here, has brought attention to this place.

“We have elderly who are golfers here. The main interest of this thing is targeted at the care of the elderly in our society. There is a category that we call “Super Vent” and for those who are 70 and above.

“I can tell you that about 35 percent of our members in this place are in that category (Super Vent).

“We have 60 to 80 in this place. We have people in their late 70s that have registered. From the registration list that I have seen, we have about 12 in their 70s that have registered”, he added.
