Edo State governor Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has restated that his coming has brought an end to godfatherism in the state.

He made the assertion on Wednesday while declaring open a one-day workshop on “Igniting the Economic Development and Viability of Local Government Areas in Edo,”.

The event was held at the Staff Training Centre, Benin City, where he stated that he has come to put an end to it

“I promised not to allow godfatherism to thrive again in the state. I also reassured the attendees that we will strive to ensure that only competent persons with character and proven integrity are elected as chairmen and councilors in the forthcoming local government election in the state”.

He said while the local governments may not have enough, with the little available, “we must be able to convince the people that we are using it for their own good.

“The local government is the first point of interaction with the government and democracy”, he stressed.

The guest speaker at the workshop, Mr. Igbinidu Inneh, stressed that it was important to review the sources of Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) from the local governments, to make it more viable to meet the needs of the people.
