… Say they won’t support northern presidency
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has said that the presidential candidate of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, was a wrong choice going by the agreement to rotate power between the north and south
Obasanjo, who took a swipe on the PDP for planning to thwart the arrangement entered into by leaders from both regions (north and south), insisted that it was the turn of the south to produce the next president of the country.
He stated this at his Hilltop home while meeting with the presidential candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Tinubu, in Abeokuta, Ogun State, recently.
According to the former president, the PDP’s decision is not politically correct and is against the spirit of the understanding between Northern and Southern Nigeria.
At the meeting Obasanjo was quoted to have said: “I am very much aware that it’s the turn of the South to produce the next President of Nigeria. I was part of the meeting when the agreement was made between Northern and Southern leaders.
“I am even surprised PDP gave her ticket to another Northern candidate. It will be an injustice to the South if the North retains power after eight years of rule. We will do the right thing when the time comes”.
Meanwhile, the governorship candidate on the platform of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and former minister of State for education, Olorogun Barr. Kenneth Gbagi, FNIM, had earlier said Atiku can never be the president of Nigeria.
He maintained that it was unthinkable and insensitive for some politicians to return power to the north after president Muhammadu Buhari’s tenure in office.
He warned that the implication of attempting or thinking of doing otherwise, will be injurious to the foundation of all children from the south yet unborn.
He tressed that people must have character, just as he noted that one of the greatest problems that is missing today is character.
“The North has produced president Muhammadu Buhari. His tenure is now ending by 2023. It therefore follows that south will produce the next president.
“We cannot be toyed with and we cannot be told to close our eyes to the issue of rotational presidency between the north and the south. It is a no! no!! no!!!.
“Fellow Nigerians, this is very serious, let your conscience be your guide. Let the south do their presidency for one term of eight years and power move to the north. We must live as a people and respect the idiosyncrasy of one another and by that arrangement, it is a southern president” Gbagi declared.
