The workers who carried placards with various inscriptions, chanted solidarity song at the front of the mall, calling on the management to pay them their salaries.
Some of the protesters who spoke on condition of anonymity, said that the management was owing them over three months salaries.
“They said that the shoprite is no longer South Africa business, the company has been sold to one company in Lagos and they don’t want to pay us off.
“Even the salaries they are owing us, they refused to pay, how do they expect us to leave without our salaries.
Another protester said, “And you know as they handed over this February, new management, new policy, so they don’t want to pay-off workers. They have compensation for the managers, if they want to still work, they can work under a new policy, but if they don’t, they be compensated.
“But what of the workers that are not managers, like those who are working in the department, the controllers and others, they said they don’t have anything for us, that’s why we are protecting. I am going back to house now after this protest since I don’t have anything doing at the shoprite again”.
When contracted one of the top manager of the Mall, simply identified as Chiedu, said, “I can’t speak to you on this issue, tell the person that told you to take you to top manager”.
