Journalists decry rising cost of living, demand government action on key issues

The Delta State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has issued a strong call for urgent government intervention on worsening economic and security crises in the state and across the nation.

At its congress held at the NUJ Press Centre, Asaba, on Wednesday, March 25, 2025, the Union demanded decisive action on hunger, high transportation costs, farmer-herder clashes, and the alarming rate of kidnappings.

The congress, presided over by NUJ Chairman Comrade Churchill Oyowe, acknowledged Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s strides in infrastructure and civil service reforms but insisted that the government must do more to alleviate the economic suffering of citizens.

Hunger Crisis: ‘Nigerians Are Begging to Eat’

The NUJ painted a grim picture of the country’s economic reality, declaring that the high cost of living and inflation had driven many Nigerians to the brink of starvation.

The congress called on the government at all levels to declare a state of emergency on hunger, warning that despite Nigeria’s abundant resources, citizens were struggling to afford basic meals.

“The government must act now before the situation spirals out of control,” the communiqué stated.

The union also urged authorities to provide incentives and security for farmers to increase food production and ensure access to farmlands.

Security Concerns: Kidnappings, Farmer-Herder Clashes Worsen

The NUJ raised alarm over the rising wave of kidnappings and violent crimes, demanding that the state government and security agencies take immediate and decisive action to protect lives and property.

Particular concern was raised over persistent farmer-herder clashes, especially in Uwheru, Ughelli North, and other affected communities.

Congress called for the full implementation of the state’s anti-grazing law and emphasized the need for collaboration between traditional rulers, community leaders, and security agencies to end the attacks on farmers.

High Cost of Transportation: Fuel Prices Down, Fares Still High

The Union expressed deep frustration over soaring transport fares despite a reduction in fuel prices.

It blamed the transportation crisis for the overall inflation in goods and services and urged the government to engage transport unions, including the NURTW, RTEAN, and COMTOA, to address the issue.

Housing Crisis: Rent Control and Low-Cost Housing Needed

Congress condemned the exorbitant cost of rent in Delta State and called on the government to introduce regulatory measures to prevent exploitation by landlords and real estate agents.

It also urged the construction of low-cost housing to ease the burden on struggling residents.

Other Resolutions

The NUJ also reaffirmed its support for the Delta State Power Reform Bill, which is awaiting the governor’s assent, stating that its passage would transform the state’s electricity sector.

Additionally, the Union commended the resettlement efforts for Okuama community residents but urged the military to either release detained individuals or charge them in court, as required by law.

The congress concluded by calling on Governor Oborevwori to engage with the press to highlight his administration’s achievements and respond to pressing public concerns.

With the people of Delta State facing growing hardship and insecurity, the NUJ’s resolutions serve as a direct challenge to the government: act now, or risk an even deeper crisis.
